Your Thanksgiving Guests Can See the Glass House Only If They Stay Through Sunday

October 29, 2026

Which day are your guests leaving? In New Canaan this Thanksgiving, the departure date matters more than the arrival date.

The town's two best-known landmarks keep schedules that barely overlap during the holiday week. The Glass House runs tours Sunday, Monday and Thursday through Saturday, and it is closed every Tuesday and Wednesday plus November 26 through 28 for Thanksgiving. Grace Farms is open Tuesday through Sunday, closed Mondays, and its calendar lists Thursday, November 26, 2026, as a closed day. Put those two calendars together and the Glass House has no tours from Tuesday, November 24, through Saturday, November 28. A family visiting Wednesday to Saturday never gets a day when it is open. Sunday, November 29, is the only day of the long weekend when both landmarks are open.

The week, day by day

All hours below are the standard hours each organization posts for its season. Grace Farms notes that its hours are subject to change and points visitors to its events calendar for special hours.

Day The Glass House Grace Farms
Sat., Nov. 21 Open, last tour departs 2:30 p.m. Open 10 a.m.–5 p.m.
Sun., Nov. 22 Open, last tour departs 2:30 p.m. Open noon–5 p.m.
Mon., Nov. 23 Open, last tour departs 2:30 p.m. Closed
Tue., Nov. 24 Closed Open 10 a.m.–5 p.m.
Wed., Nov. 25 Closed Open 10 a.m.–5 p.m.
Thu., Nov. 26 Closed for Thanksgiving Closed
Fri., Nov. 27 Closed for Thanksgiving Open 10 a.m.–5 p.m.
Sat., Nov. 28 Closed for Thanksgiving Open 10 a.m.–5 p.m.
Sun., Nov. 29 Open, last tour departs 2:30 p.m. Open noon–5 p.m.

Thanksgiving Day is the only date on the grid when both are closed. On the other eight days, at least one of them is open.

Why the Glass House needs a date before anything else

Once the Thanksgiving closure is in place, the Glass House is the harder of the two to fit in, and its rules leave less room to improvise. Admission is by tour only. Every tour starts and ends at the Visitor Center and Design Store at 199 Elm Street, and a shuttle carries visitors to and from the site. In November and December the last tour of the day departs at 2:30 p.m., earlier than the 3:45 p.m. weekday and 3:00 p.m. Sunday departures it runs April through October. On Sunday, November 29, that means booking a tour by early afternoon.

Three more rules affect a family group:

  • Age. Every child must be at least eight years old and come with an adult. The Glass House says car seat regulations on the shuttle prevent it from taking infants and younger children to the site.
  • Tickets. All sales are final, with no refunds or date exchanges, and the Glass House recommends booking ahead because tours often sell out. If a guest's travel plans are still uncertain, wait until the dates are firm before buying.
  • Parking. The Visitor Center has no parking. The Glass House recommends the Lumberyard Lot, a municipal lot at 244 Elm Street, which is free after 10:30 a.m. and about a five-minute walk away.

The season itself ends December 14, 2026. For guests who can only visit over Thanksgiving, the weekends before and after the holiday are among the last tour dates of the year. The Glass House's events page also lists a Glass House Presents piano program on November 21, the Saturday before Thanksgiving. The Design Store keeps the in-season Thursday through Monday schedule, 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., and doesn't post separate holiday hours.

Friday and Saturday belong to Grace Farms

With the Glass House closed Friday and Saturday, Grace Farms at 365 Lukes Wood Road covers the middle of the weekend. Visiting is free and open to all ages. Grace Farms asks visitors to schedule ahead through its website. The all-ages policy matters for groups with younger children, since they can't join a Glass House tour on any day.

Within Grace Farms, the hours vary by building. The Tea Pavilion is open 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and noon to 5 p.m. on weekends. The Court opens at noon on Fridays and Sundays and at 10 a.m. on the other open days. On the Friday after Thanksgiving, a late-morning arrival works better than a 10 a.m. one if the Court is part of the plan.

Grace Farms runs public tours at 10:30 a.m. on Saturdays year-round and on Thursdays May through December. With Thanksgiving Day closed, Saturday, November 28, is the holiday weekend's guided option. Grace Farms has one more closure to know about earlier in the month. On Sunday, November 15, general visitation is closed and entry is only for ticketholders to the 3 p.m. Nemanja Radulović and Double Sens concert.

Filling the days around the two landmarks

The rest of New Canaan's cultural calendar sits mostly on a Tuesday through Saturday week, much like Grace Farms. That leaves Monday, November 23, as the day the Glass House has mostly to itself.

Silvermine Arts Center. The Holiday Salon, The Gift of Art, runs November 7 through December 23. Gallery and store hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Silvermine says it closes on most holidays and hasn't posted a Thanksgiving-week schedule, so check before driving over on Friday or Saturday.

New Canaan Museum & Historical Society. The museum at 13 Oenoke Ridge lists public hours of Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., or by appointment. Its homepage doesn't list a holiday exception, so the same advice applies.

New Canaan Nature Center. The Nature Center and the New Canaan Land Trust host the Thanksgiving Weekend Waddle, a free walk after Thanksgiving Day over the Nature Center trails and the Land Trust's Greenlink Trail, with light refreshments in the Visitor Center afterward. The walk starts at 10 a.m. at the Visitor Center. Registration is requested, and children must be accompanied by an adult. The listing gives the month and time but not the exact day, so confirm the date when you register. The property is open sunrise to sunset, and the Visitor Center keeps Monday through Saturday hours of 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The grounds are the one stop on this list that is open every day.

Elm Street and nearby. Downtown has added several newer shops for guests looking for gifts. The Amateur opened at 70 Main St. with running, cycling and ski apparel and accessories. Founder Alex Holmes told NewCanaanite.com the shop focuses on clothing and accessories, not hard goods. Kristen Setter's women's clothing shop Kset moved from its Elm Street pop-up to 6 South Ave., the former space of The Agency, according to NewCanaanite.com. Dry Martini Clothing, a Manhattan-based women's brand, chose Elm Street for its second physical store, NewCanaanite.com reported in August. The New Canaan Chamber's member listing gives its address as 78 Elm Street. If coffee is part of the downtown loop, Green & Tonic's own locations page still lists its 21 Forest Street café as temporarily closed because of flash flood damage. NewCanaanite.com reported on the café's repairs in August.

One way to lay out the week

For guests arriving the weekend before Thanksgiving and leaving the Sunday after, this order puts each place on a day it is open:

  1. Saturday, Nov. 21. The New Canaan Nature Center Holiday Market runs 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. with free admission and gift vendors. In the afternoon, book a Glass House tour or the 4 p.m. Glass House Presents piano program.
  2. Monday, Nov. 23. Glass House tour. Grace Farms, Silvermine and the museum are all closed on Mondays.
  3. Tuesday or Wednesday, Nov. 24–25. Grace Farms, followed by the Holiday Salon at Silvermine or the Historical Society on Oenoke Ridge.
  4. Thursday, Nov. 26. Both landmarks are closed. The Nature Center grounds stay open sunrise to sunset.
  5. Friday or Saturday, Nov. 27–28. The Thanksgiving Weekend Waddle at 10 a.m. once you've confirmed the date, and Grace Farms after its Court opens. The 10:30 a.m. Saturday tour is Grace Farms' guided option.
  6. Sunday, Nov. 29. Glass House tour, last departure 2:30 p.m., with Grace Farms open noon to 5 p.m. if anyone wants a second look.

For guests who are coming back in December, the New Canaan Chamber holds its Holiday Stroll on Elm Street on the first Friday evening of December. Stores and restaurants stay open, and people walk under the downtown holiday lights, which are paid for by a fundraising campaign and stay up from November through January. By that rule the Stroll would fall on December 4, but the Chamber hasn't announced the 2026 date yet. That evening leaves ten days before the Glass House closes its season on December 14.
